We love a good market especially when it involves a mix of local arts and crafters, boutique designers and some of the best food stalls in town.
That’s why we decided to round up a list of our eight favourite markets to visit in Joburg:
The Linden Market
The Linden Market, found at the Botanical Gardens on 45 Thomas Bowler Street in Emmarentia, is all about showcasing beautifully crafted products to support the local community. From vintage to artisinal and exclusive, the market aims at creating a unique platform for local designers, food vendors and shop owners. Choosing only the finest quality brands, the selection process is quite lengthy, which is why the market is only open every few months. The next market takes place on Saturday 2 September from 9am until 5pm. www.thelindenmarket.com
Hazel Food Market
Although not really in Joburg, the Hazel Food Market is Pretoria’s very own Neighbourgoods market. Open every Saturday in the Greenlyn Village Centre, this market is home to some of the freshest produce the capital has to offer. The market includes food vendors of artisan coffee, Persian pastries, Belgian waffles and French crepes and tons of other delicious cuisine from around the world. So, take a drive out to Pretoria and make a day of it. www.hazelfoodmarket.co.za
Field Market
Nestled under trees at the Field and Study Park, corner 14th street and Louise Avenue in Parkmore, the Field Market is a relatively new market to hit Sandton and is only open on the second Saturday of every month. With an offering of food and beverage stalls, local handcrafted goods and live music, it’s a sure way to spend a fun afternoon in the park with friends and family. The market is open from 10am to 3pm although some food stalls set up shop from 9am. There is a parking fee of R10 per car at the main parking field and all proceeds are donated to the Friends of the Field & Study to assist them with the maintenance and improvement of the park. Entrance is free. www.fieldmarket.co.za
Bryanston Organic Market
Open every Thursday and Saturday from 9am to 3pm, the Bryanston Organic Market has been a firm favourite for market-goers and Bryanston residents. Not only is there a selection of organic and natural food stands, but there’s also an array of arts and crafts to choose from, with everything being handmade, produced or manufactured in South Africa. Local is definitely ‘lekker’ at this market! www.bryanstonorganicmarket.co.za
Neigbourgoods Market
Probably the first market of its kind in Joburg, Neighbourgoods in Braamfontein has become the most popular place to spend a Saturday morning or afternoon, where you’ll get to indulge in gourmet snacks, sweet treats and a variety of craft drinks. Plus, there’s also a craft market on the rooftop of the building that sells locally handmade goods and products. So, once you’re done feasting on all the food, make your way upstairs for some retail therapy and enjoy the live music and social setting. www.neighbourgoodsmarket.co.za
