That’s why we rounded up a list of our five favourite Asian restaurants to visit in Joburg:
The Great Eastern Food Bar
Voted the Best Asian Eatery in Joburg for 2016 by Eat Out, The Great Eastern Food Bar situated in Melville serves quintessential Asian dishes at its finest. For starters you can choose between deep fried tofu, sashimi tacos or rice paper rolls. Mains include Korean fried chicken served with rice or salad, kimchi ginger noodles or whole smoked trout. Momo Baohaus has one of the most extensive Asian menus around. With an array of different options, there’s bound to be something for everyone at this intimate Greenside eatery. Think tapas dishes like twice cooked beef ribs, prawn wontons and crispy calamari, or start the meal off with a few of their tasty bao buns that include fillings like teriyaki beef or roasted duck. The People’s Republic Of Noodles in Linden is exactly as the name suggests, an eatery all about the noodles. Start with their famous hand-break bread, Chinese pancakes, shaved beef with plum chilli sauce or their tender chashao pork slices, before moving on to signature dishes like the spicy beef noodles, the tofu vegetable soup noodles or the black pepper chicken noodles. Probably one of the first Asian restaurants to open its doors in Joburg, Orient is still a firm favourite for local diners. From sushi combinations to curries, Orient in Melrose Arch has it all. Opt for their prawn toast, chicken satay skewers or crystal salad rolls for starters. For mains, try their famous hot plate, with either beef or ostrich, their chicken cashew nut stir-fry or their bang bang duck for those looking for more heat. Plus, they also have an extensive dim sum menu that includes baus, wontons and gyozas. And if you have room for dessert, then give the berry meringue or chocolate spring rolls a try. Home to some of the best dim sums in town, So Yum in Hyde Park offers a mix of small bites, dim sums, sushi, curries and noodles. Their Hong Kong Pears, spinach and cream cheese gao, baked puffed parcels and spicy fish cakes are a must for starters. Main dishes include options like thai green curry, duck breast in a plum sauce and prawn phad thai.
