Roald Dahl’s classic hit the stage last month at the Teatro theatre, Montecasino and we had the pleasure of experiencing the magic first hand and dining at one of Monte’s fabulous restaurants, Lima Tapas Bar.

Our evening got off to a good start at Lima Tapas Bar. Lima is like no other restaurant in Joburg. Focusing their attention on Latin, American cuisine, their dishes are inspired by food served during the great Andean civilisations of South America.

At Lima you can choose between a variety of different tapas and still leave feeling satisfied. Some of the dishes we ordered to share were the deliciously filled fig and cheese empanadas, the calamari tubes stuffed with chorizo and goat’s cheese and pork ribs that were covered in a sweet, tangy basting. While our main included the rump espetada. Our time at Lima was further enhanced by the excellent service the restaurant has to offer.

Their drinks menu is also extensive and includes a list of classic South American cocktails like the Old Cuban (Bacardi Ocho Rum, Bitters, mint leaves, sugar syrup and lime Juice topped with Prosecco) and Tea-quila (Espolon Tequila, Homebrewed Ice Tea, Cointreau, Lime Simple Syrup). Alas we stuck to a glass of white wine for the evening.

Lima Tapas Bar delivers on quality, food and service. If we hadn’t been so tight on time, we probably would have enjoyed sipping on more tantalising cocktails in their bar and cigar lounge – a real treat for those looking to enjoy something a little different at Monte.

Nevertheless we made our way to the theatre for what critics called is an evening of unadulterated bliss and weren’t disappointed. Never in our wildest dreams did we ever expect Roald Dahl’s tale of the extraordinary little girl be turned into a stage musical, but thanks to Dennis Kelly, who wrote the book for Matilda The Musical and Tim Minchin, who wrote the music and lyrics, Matilda The Musical is an edge-of-the-seats nail biter, an exhilarating tale of empowerment and not just for kids, but for adults too.

From the brazen performances by the adorable young cast, who sings and dances their way into your hearts, to the fearsome cross-dressing school headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, Matilda delivers a thrilling blast of fun, that is witty, smart, dark and beautiful. It’s a play everyone of all ages can relate to.

Matilda The Musical will be on stage at the Teatro Theatre at Montecasino until the 2nd December 2018.
