We had never considered spending a night at an airport hotel in our own city, but after an amazing evening in the beautifully appointed InterContinental Johannesburg O.R. Tambo Airport Hotel we have to say that this is certainly something that we will be doing again.
The hotel is situated in one of the prime spots at the airport – a mere minute or so’s walk away from the arrivals terminal, and boasts the title of South Africa’s only luxury airport hotel. And luxury it certainly is.
The hotel serves perfect base for travellers that may be flying out early in the morning or evening, or even for honeymooners to relax and unwind after the wedding before jetting off to their Honeymoon destination. Some guests are international travellers in transit to their next destination that just need a spot to rest and unwind, and others are families travelling along for work – the list is endless.
More and more often the team at the hotel are seeing a trend in hosting conferences at the airport as well – perfect for teams or suppliers who are flying in from either abroad or from other parts of the country, who can then stay at the hotel, and local team members join them on site – against morning traffic as well to conference, as opposed to have to transport and accommodate visitors in other area’s and then get everyone to the conference venue on time.
InterContinental Johannesburg O.R. Tambo Airport Hotel offers a number of conference rooms of different sizes, as well as boardrooms, hooked up with telephone and video-conferencing facilities as well – allowing guests from around the world to call in to join the meeting.
The well known Quills restaurant on the ground floor of the hotel is a popular spot with hotel guests, and other visitors too, and the menu is extensive. They are also open 24 hours a day, so even if one is arriving late or departing early, it is possible to get a bite to eat. The restaurant features a giant quill sculpture as well as a number of African masks and artefacts, lending it a South African flavour, but still maintaining an international look and feel.
We enjoyed a bottle of Laborie MCC with our dinner and selected the Butter Chicken Curry, and a Tamarind Infused Mixed Vegetable Curry, which were both served with a generous helping of steamed Basmati rice, poppadums and sambals. The menu offers something for everyone, with fish, salads, pasta and of course a number of vegetarian and gluten free options as well.
The hotel has a selection of rooms available – adding up to 138 in total, and cater to different tastes and price brackets. Deluxe and Executive rooms are all impeccably laid out and decorated, as well as being spacious and offering dedicated areas to work, relax and sleep. There are also two luxury Suites available, and all rooms have triple glazed windows to reduce the noise from the airport below, and the thick blackout curtains ensured that we slept incredibly soundly too.
A well equipped gym is located on the 8th floor – with an amazing view out over the airport, as well as an in-house Camelot Spa, which provides a number of pampering and rejuvenating treatments from facials to massages and much more, as well as an indoor heated swimming pool – also with a view of note, and we enjoyed watching the sun set while sipping on delicious home made iced tea, and snugly wrapped in our fluffy robes and comfy slippers.
InterContinental O.R. Tambo Airport hotel certainly does offer both business and leisure travellers a luxurious and conveniently located accommodation offering in Joburg.
