Named after his two late grandfathers, Douglas + Hale is Chef James Diack’s fourth venture and we love it! If funky, cool and creative cocktails are your thing – then you will love it as much as we do, too. From the décor which carries a rather ritzy, burlesque feel, to an extensive wine selection which will leave every taste and palate satisfied this is an experience from start to finish. Cocktails are created with passion and the names are delightful – The Black Pearl, a rum based cocktail, was a huge hit at our table. The Electric Coolaid also had us intrigued and cocktail guru and master drink creator Jesse Chinn (who bares an uncanny resemblance to Captain Jack Sparrow), kept us well entertained as he explained his creation process and showed us step by step how a few of the cocktails are made, much to our delight! The…
What better time to crack open a few bottles of perfectly chilled rosé, spend some time with friends and family and let the worries from the year disappear, as the holiday season kicks off with perfect summer evenings here in Jozi. Rosé is proving to be a popular choice with consumers as the temperature’s soar – and it’s the perfect accompaniment to just about everything – beach, park, braai, lunch, sundowners… you get the idea! Flagstone’s Poetry Cinsault Rosé is much more than a light, refreshing summer wine with zip, rosé is about a lifestyle, and like poetry it truly embraces the joy, and highlights the natural sadness of our human condition, it eulogises the cycle of nature and blushes a romantic cherry-blossom pink. Beneath the top is a bouquet of crushed summer berries, black and red cherries, supported by subtle spicy tones to introduce expressive juicy berry flavours that…
One of South Africa’s favourite and super easy drinking wines, Durbanville Hills, have just launched their premium collection of wines, the Collectors Reserve – which is totally inspired by the energy and stunning scenery of Cape Town. What’s not to love? This new range is created from only the best grapes from Cape Town’s best vineyards, and like it’s name, has been designed as a collector’s item for both wine and art lovers alike. This is something unlike anything you have ever seen, or tasted, before. “To complement each of the wines in the range, Durbanville Hills commissioned local artist, Theo Paul Vorster, to pair each wine with a prominent landmark in Cape Town, most of which are visible from the winery.” says cellar master Martin Moore. “Vorster is known for creating unique pieces of art using hand-coloured linocuts, ultimately transporting viewers into an energised, playful dimension. To cement the…

Stellenbosch wine estate Tokara, has just released their very first 10-year old Potstill Brandy which honours the age-old Cognac tradition, and uses a Chenin blanc base wine, which is double distilled retaining only the heart fraction for ageing in Limousin oak barrels for a minimum of 10 years. One of our favourite wines – De Grendel have literally cleaned up at this years Michelangelo International Wine & Spirts Awards, walking away with the African Cellar Suppliers Pinot Noir Trophy for their Op Die Berg Pinot Noir 2015 – as well as three double gold medals awarded to the De Grendel Koetshuis Sauvignon Blanc 2017 and 2013 and the De Grendel Loyalty Club-exclusive Elim Shiraz 2016. Well done guys! Since its inception the Michelangelo Awards has differentiated itself from other competitions in using a judging panel comprising a majority of international wine and spirits experts. Says Charles Hopkins, winemaker at De Grendel “We are incredibly proud…
If you are heading down to the Cape soon, and are going to be in the Durbanville area, then may we suggest a stop in at the beautiful Meerendal Estate. You can taste some vino of course, but there is loads more on offer and Meerendal boasts biking and running trails, paragliding (when the weather’s just right!), and its family friendly weekend vibe. There are two restaurants on the estate, The Crown Restaurant and Carlucci’s – the latter is the one that fills up fast so that come lunchtime, one would be hard pressed to find a seat in the restaurant – either in the undercover area or the garden with its sweeping views of the Boland mountains. The restaurant has been open since 2016 – initially as a small restaurant which has evolved into a full blown restaurant with rolling lawns, ample space for kids to play in a…
